Debre Berhan, Ethiopia – June 5, 2025 – In a vibrant and colourful ceremony today, Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization (JeCCDO) officially inaugurated Tayitu Bitul Academy (TBA) in Debre Berhan City. The event marked a major milestone in JeCCDO’s mission to promote child-centered education rooted in community collaboration.
The ceremony began with a ribbon-cutting moment-a symbolic gesture officially opening the Academy’s doors to the public. Immediately following this, guests were invited to take part in a guided tour of the Academy’s essential facilities, including its child-friendly classrooms and other learning spaces designed to nurture creativity, inclusion, and academic excellence.
Participants then gathered for the formal program, led by W/o Rekik Dagne as the Master of Ceremony. In his welcoming address, Ato Mulugeta Gebru, CEO of JeCCDO, underscored the Academy’s potential to serve as a model for accessible, high-quality education.
Ato Amare Assefa, Director of TBA, introduced the vision and mission of the school, elaborating on its innovative educational approaches and its commitment to holistic child development.
The event also featured remarks from the Deputy Mayor of Debre Berhan City, the Head of Debre Berhan Education department, and a representative from a partner Community-Based Organization (CBO). All emphasized the strong partnership between JeCCDO, local government, and the community, which made the establishment of TBA possible.
A traditional bread-cutting ceremonyfollowed—an expression of unity and shared hope that marked the beginning of a meaningful journey for the school and the families it serves.
Another major highlight of the day was a series of performances by TBA students, These moving presentations showcased the children’s talent, creativity, and school spirit, earning heartfelt applause from the audience.
One other memorable moment of the day was the performance, presented by professional drama performed by professional artists, powerfully reenacting the historic scene between Empress Tayitu, Emperor Menelik II, and Pietro (Count Antonelli)—a pivotal moment that symbolized Ethiopian sovereignty and resistance during the Treaty of Wuchale dispute. The performance resonated deeply with the audience and served as a tribute to the academy’s namesake, Empress Tayitu, a figure of leadership and resilience.
The program was concluded with closing remarks by W/o Maaza Kitaw, JeCCDO Board Chairperson. A lunch reception wrapped up the celebration, providing a space for connection, reflection, and joy.
With its doors now open, Tayitu Bitul Academy stands not only as a school but as a beacon of hope and excellence, lighting the way for a brighter educational future for children in Debre Berhan and beyond.
